clean energy to Luzon
Alternergy Holdings Corporation (PSE: ALTER), a Philippine pioneer in renewable power development, through its subsidiary Alabat Wind Power Corp. (AWPC), has completed the Philippines’ first overhead sea-crossing transmission link built for a wind power project, establishing a critical connection between its 64-megawatt (MW) Alabat Wind Project in Quezon Province and the Luzon mainland.
Spanning 1.4 kilometers, the overhead crossing forms part of the project’s 37-kilometer, 69- kilovolt (kV) transmission line. The crossing required two 100-meter-tall and two 45-meter- tall lattice towers, providing the infrastructure needed to transfer electricity from Alabat island to the Luzon grid.
This project marks Alternergy’s first inter-island transmission connection and demonstrates the company’s capability to deliver complex energy infrastructure in challenging geographic and engineering conditions.
“Developing a wind project on an island requires more than building the generating facility itself. It also means creating the infrastructure needed to deliver clean power to consumers,” said Gerry Magbanua, president of Alternergy Holdings Corporation. “The Alabat sea crossing addresses that challenge and demonstrates our ability to deliver complex infrastructure that unlocks the potential of the country’s renewable energy resources.”
The transmission route links the wind farm on Alabat Island, which faces the Pacific Ocean, to a connection point along the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) Gumaca– Lopez (Hondagua) 69-kV transmission line. The broader transmission infrastructure includes 483 poles spanning 37 kilometers.
“This milestone reflects the expertise and persistence of our project team and contractors, alongside the support of NGCP, the provincial government of Quezon, the municipalities of Alabat and Quezon, and our host communities. Their collaboration has been instrumental in bringing this challenging infrastructure to completion,” Mr. Magbanua added.
The Alabat Wind Power Project consists of eight 8-MW wind turbines, the largest commercial wind turbines deployed outside China, supplied by Envision Energy and designed to withstand typhoons. It is the first wind farm in Quezon province and is among the first wind projects to be completed under the Department of Energy’s second Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP 2).
The Alabat project, together with the 128-MW Tanay Wind Power Project in Rizal, is expected to lift Alternergy’s operating capacity from 119 MW to about 311 MW by the end of 2026.
